Getting around

Transport, language, entry, and safety are the details that shape how this trip feels day to day.

Getting around

Most trips use Nadi arrivals, resort transfers, ferries, speedboats, domestic flights, taxis, buses, private drivers, and occasional rental cars on Viti Levu. Island transfers are weather-sensitive, so build buffers.

Language

English works well across resorts, airports, ferries, tours, taxis, and most visitor services. Fijian or Fiji Hindi greetings are appreciated, especially in villages and local markets.

English ease 4/5

Visa

Fiji entry is passport- and purpose-dependent. Citizens of Fiji's published visa-exempt countries can receive a visitor permit on arrival, normally for up to four months, if they show a valid passport, return ticket, confirmed address or accommodation, sufficient funds, a completed arrival card, and any visa needed for the next country. Other passport holders must secure the appropriate visa before travel. A visitor permit cannot be used for employment; a valid permit may be extended once for up to two months. Transit stays of up to 72 hours and medical or yacht travel have separate permit rules.

Safety & health

The U.S. State Department lists Fiji at Level 1: Exercise Normal Precautions, with increased caution noted for Colo-i-Suva Forest Park because phone and bag snatchings occur there.

Full Travel Fit

A wider view of how this destination matches different travel styles.

Backpacking3/5

The Yasawas and some local stays work for backpackers, but ferries, island packages, resort pricing, and limited transport make Fiji less flexible than Southeast Asia.

Digital nomad2/5

Nadi, Suva, Denarau, and some resorts can support short work stays, but internet, cost, island isolation, and visa or permit limits make Fiji a weak nomad base.

Budget2/5

Local buses and simple stays exist, but resorts, ferries, boats, diving, food packages, and island transfers make the core Fiji experience expensive.

Safety4/5

Fiji is Level 1 overall, with practical caution needed for theft, roads, swimming, boating, cyclones, remote medical access, and weather-disrupted transfers.

Nightlife2/5

Nightlife is mostly resort bars, Nadi or Suva venues, and beach events; Fiji is stronger for island time, families, diving, and culture.

Nature4/5

Reefs, waterfalls, rainforest, volcanic islands, marine life, beaches, and outer island scenery make nature a major reason to visit.

Beach5/5

Mamanucas, Yasawas, Coral Coast, Taveuni, Kadavu, and resort islands give Fiji world-class beach and reef appeal.

Road trip3/5

Viti Levu can be rewarding by car or driver, but Fiji is mostly an island-transfer destination rather than a classic road-trip country.

Beginner-friendly4/5

English, resorts, package logistics, friendly tourism culture, and direct transfers make Fiji easy once booked, though independent island hopping needs planning.

Social4/5

Resorts, dive boats, backpacker island stays, village visits, kava nights, ferries, and family travel create strong social opportunities.
