Getting around

Transport, language, entry, and safety are the details that shape how this trip feels day to day.

Getting around

Myanmar normally connects through Yangon, Mandalay, and Nay Pyi Taw international airports, with domestic flights, rail, buses, private cars, taxis, and river or lake boats. Current conflict, checkpoints, restricted regions, curfews, airport and highway closures, earthquake damage, poor roads, and medical limits make ordinary route planning unreliable; confirm every movement with current official guidance.

Language

English can work in some hotels, old tourism areas, and larger-city services, but Burmese is important for most local logistics. Current Level 4 guidance makes ordinary leisure planning inappropriate.

Visa

Myanmar entry is passport-, purpose-, document-, and route-specific, and it is not a destination to plan while current U.S. Level 4 Do Not Travel advice applies. Ordinary travelers need a visa before arrival; the official eVisa system currently offers tourist and business applications only to listed nationalities. A tourist eVisa is single-entry for up to 28 days, its approval letter is valid 90 days, and eVisa entry is limited to Yangon, Mandalay, Nay Pyi Taw airports or Kawthaung land border. Ordinary ASEAN/Singapore/Vietnam visa exemptions, business sponsorship, restricted-area permissions, transit, dual nationality, and work/study rules must be checked separately.

Safety & health

The U.S. State Department lists Burma/Myanmar at Level 4: Do Not Travel, issued 8 May 2026, because of armed conflict, civil unrest, arbitrary enforcement, poor health infrastructure, landmines and unexploded ordnance, and crime.

Best time, month by month

Normal seasonal advice is secondary to Level 4 Do Not Travel guidance. If travel becomes appropriate, November-February is the coolest dry-season window for most routes, March-April is hot, and May-October brings monsoon disruption, flooding, and harder road access.

Low

Do Not Travel guidance overrides normal seasonality. January would normally be cool and dry for heritage routes, but conflict, access, and legal risks remain the deciding factor.

Full Travel Fit

A wider view of how this destination matches different travel styles.

Backpacking1/5

Myanmar used to be a strong backpacking route, but Level 4 guidance, armed conflict, checkpoints, access limits, and medical constraints make it unsuitable.

Digital nomad1/5

Longer stays are not appropriate under current Do Not Travel guidance because of security, internet, legal, banking, health, and movement risks.

Budget1/5

Low local costs are outweighed by conflict, evacuation, medical, permit, payment, and transport risks.

Safety1/5

Myanmar is Level 4 due to armed conflict, unrest, arbitrary enforcement, poor health infrastructure, landmines, unexploded ordnance, crime, and IEDs.

Nightlife1/5

Nightlife should not be promoted while Do Not Travel guidance, curfews, unrest, and security risks remain active.

Nature2/5

Inle Lake, beaches, mountains, rivers, and forests are major strengths, but access and safety are severely constrained.

Beach1/5

Ngapali and coastal areas are scenic, but beach travel is not a responsible planning reason under Level 4 conditions.

Road trip1/5

Road travel faces poor infrastructure, conflict, checkpoints, landmine risk, restricted regions, highway closures, and medical limits.

Beginner-friendly1/5

Current Level 4 guidance, conflict, permits, transport disruption, and health risks make Myanmar unsuitable for beginner leisure travel.

Social1/5

Myanmar has strong hospitality, but social travel should not be promoted while Do Not Travel guidance remains in place.

On the route

  • Avoid demonstrations, political or military sites, checkpoints, night highway travel, and unofficial routes. Do not photograph or record police, soldiers, demonstrations, government buildings, or security incidents.
  • Landmines and unexploded ordnance remain a risk away from well-used roads, especially in conflict-affected rural and border areas. Do not touch suspicious objects and follow local restrictions.
  • Arbitrary detention, digital-content offences, drone restrictions, conscription, dual-nationality exposure, drug penalties, and restrictions affecting LGBT people can create serious legal risk. Carry your passport and visa and keep sensitive material off devices.

Health

  • Medical care is limited outside Yangon and Mandalay, and facilities may lack medicines, blood supplies, specialist treatment, or reliable power. Arrange comprehensive insurance that covers medical evacuation and conflict-related disruption before any essential travel.
  • Bring regular medicines in original packaging and a contingency supply. Heat, flooding, dengue, malaria, contaminated water, and disrupted food or medicine supply chains can add health risk.
  • Emergency numbers are ambulance 192, fire 191, and police 199. Response times and access can be poor outside major cities.
