Getting around

Transport, language, entry, and safety are the details that shape how this trip feels day to day.

Getting around

Do not plan ordinary travel in Yemen. Movement is subject to conflict, checkpoints, permits, fragmented control, damaged roads, fuel shortages, kidnapping and landmine risk, unreliable airports and airspace, and limited emergency support; Red Sea and Gulf of Aden maritime routes also face current security threats.

Language

English support is limited outside specialist hotels or guides; plan around Arabic or a translation tool.

Visa

Yemen requires a visa before travel, and the authorities at the intended entry point enforce the rules. For British passport holders, the passport must be valid for at least 6 months after arrival and the visa should be arranged through the Yemeni Embassy; visitors staying more than 14 days must register with immigration. Other passport holders must confirm the issuing authority, route, permits, and carrier requirements directly with an official Yemeni mission. FCDO and U.S. guidance say do not travel, and unofficial Socotra tour visas may be invalid: only the Republic of Yemen government can issue a valid Yemeni visa.

Safety & health

FCDO advises against all travel to the whole of Yemen because security conditions are unpredictable; if you are there, it says to leave immediately. British Embassy services in Sana’a are suspended, no evacuation procedures are in place, and support is severely limited.

Full Travel Fit

A wider view of how this destination matches different travel styles.

Backpacking1/5

Yemen is not suitable for backpacking under Level 4 guidance, war, kidnapping, permits, landmines, fragmented control, and lack of U.S. Embassy services.

Digital nomad1/5

Longer stays are not appropriate because of conflict, infrastructure collapse, communications limits, health risk, detention risk, and no reliable emergency support.

Budget1/5

Budget travel is not a responsible framing while security, evacuation, health care, fuel, permits, and basic-services risks dominate planning.

Safety1/5

Yemen is Level 4 in current U.S. guidance and under an FCDO all-travel warning because of terrorism, armed conflict, kidnapping, detention, landmines, health risks, and extremely limited assistance.

Nightlife1/5

Nightlife should not be promoted during active conflict and severe security risk.

Nature2/5

Socotra, highlands, wadis, deserts, and coasts are extraordinary, but access and safety are severely constrained.

Beach1/5

Socotra and coastal areas have major beach value, but beach travel is not a responsible planning reason under Level 4 conditions.

Road trip1/5

Road travel is high risk because of checkpoints, armed groups, damaged roads, fuel shortages, kidnapping, landmines, and fragmented control.

Beginner-friendly1/5

Yemen is unsuitable for beginner leisure travel under current Level 4 guidance and lack of U.S. Embassy support.

Social1/5

Yemen has deep hospitality and culture, but social leisure travel should not be promoted while Do Not Travel guidance remains active.

On the route

  • FCDO says terrorism is very likely; AQAP and Islamic State-Yemen threats are heightened in Abyan, Marib, Hadramawt, and Shabwah. Political violence, front-line incidents, Houthi hostility toward Western interests, arbitrary detention, and enforced disappearances remain concerns.
  • Carjacking, robbery, extortion, kidnapping, landmines, and unexploded ordnance are widespread risks. Avoid military sites, demonstrations, political activity, and photographing security facilities; local laws, dress, Ramadan, alcohol, and LGBT+ restrictions are strict.
  • Roads, airports, airspace, and sea routes can close or become unsafe without notice. FCDO warns of risks in Yemeni territorial waters, the Bab-al-Mandab Strait, and the Gulf of Aden, including Houthi attacks and piracy.

Health

  • Medical facilities, especially outside main towns and cities, are poor. Travel would require comprehensive insurance including medical evacuation, but official advice says not to travel.
  • FCDO lists malaria, dengue, Middle East respiratory syndrome, schistosomiasis, and altitude sickness risks; check current vaccine advice with a travel-health clinician well before any essential journey.
  • Emergency services have severely limited capacity: ambulance and fire 191; police 199 or 194. FCDO says services may not respond and self-transport to hospital may be necessary.
